From Robin I Morgan - Woking, Surrey - 2006
I hope this may be of interest, and if anyone knows any of the families mentioned I'd be delighted to hear from them.
I well remember my Grandmother, Isobel MORGAN, née JOHNSON (1867-1959). Her parents were Alfred JOHNSON (a builder, born 1839) and Jane WRIGHT (born 1839). They married in 1863 and spent their early married life just off the Strand in London. Jane's parents were Thomas WRIGHT (a cheesemonger) and Ann Isabella née GUY (born c1814 in Kendal). I am told that an Ann GUY married a Thomas WRIGHT in 1836 in St George's, Bloomsbury; otherwise I haven't yet traced Thomas..
In the 1830s to 60s they had a shop near Clare Market, a site now occupied by the London School of Economics. After Thomas's death Ann apparently ran a bookshop in the Strand.
Ann Isabella's parents were a John GUY and Jane née (probably) GLOVER who were married in Barnard Castle on 12 November 1809. John became a schoolmaster in the town and their children included:
Thomas Henry 15 Jan 1819
Jane 12 Jan 1821
John 14 May 1823
Martha 2 Jan 1825
Elizabeth 14 Jan 1827
Jane appears to have married a Joseph SIMPKIN in London in Q4, 1843. One of her grandsons, Sir Oswald Simpkin, was Public Trustee c1915-1930. John senior became an author and his books include:
Geography for Children 1848
A Catechism of General Knowledge 1854
A Catechism of the History of England 1854
Mothers Own Catechism of Geography 1854
The Classbook, for the Use of Schools 1858
Familiar Questions on Familiar Things 1859
Orthographical Exercises, on an Improved System 1860
The latter book was apparently published by Wright and Simpkin, presumably his two daughters, though in 1860 Ann was still running the cheesemongering business.
In the 1851 Census John the author gives his age as 64 (ie born c1787) and place of birth as Ravenstonedale.
From the IGI it appears that the parents of John the author were
Jno GUY and Isabel CHAMBERLAIN. A John GUY married an Isabella CAMPBELL
on 9 December 1781 in Ravenstonedale. I have yet to identify this
John GUY's parents. An Isabella Chamberlain was born in Ravenstonedale
on 29 January 1752, parents Richard CHAMBERLAIN and Margaret née
LAW. They married on 17 August 1747 (and had a son, Richard, born
4 August 1750). Richard senior was christened 3 July 1720; his father
was also a Richard, probably christened 21 January 1683 and also
son of a Richard CHAMBERLAINE.
(Another Richard was christened on 16 November 1689, son of a John CHAMBERLAINE.)
A Margaret LAW was christened at Bampton on 7 October 1741, parents Joseph LAW and Mary. Another Margaret LAW was born about 1763 at Eastwood and married a Thomas MOUNSEY.
That's enough for this afternoon!
