Settle-Carlisle Railway

The line from Tebay to Darlington that once passed through Newbiggin-on-Lune was closed in 1968 so Newbiggin-on-Lune and Ravenstonedale are no longer directly accessible by train. However the scenic Settle-Carlisle railway passes within 2 miles of the village and offers visitors staying in Ravenstonedale an opportunity to enjoy fabulous scenery.

The nearest station on the scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway is about 2 miles away (Kirkby Stephen station). There is no ticket office at the station but tickets can purchased from the guard on the train. The 72 mile route from Settle to Carlisle is arguably the most scenic rail journey in England, passing through spectacular scenery in Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales. If you have never travelled on the train before we recommend that you purchase a round trip ticket so that you can enjoy all that the line has to offer.
