Mount Vesuvius is one of the most famous volcanoes on Earth and certainly one of the most dangerous. It is one of Italy's major tourist attractions. Vesuvius is renowned for its burial of Pompeii in AD 79. The people of Pompeii died but their bodies were preserved by the volcanic ash. Vesuvius has erupted over fifty times since and is still very active. A characteristic feature of Vesuvius that makes it more dangerous than other volcanoes is its unpredictability.
